The Angular Momentum of Gas in Proto-galaxies: I – Implications for the Formation of Disk Galaxies

چکیده
We use non-radiative N-body/SPH simulations of structure formation in a ΛCDM cosmology to compare the angular momentum distributions of dark matter and gas in a large sample of halos. We show that the two components have identical spin parameter distributions and that their angular momentum distributions within individual halos are very similar, all in excellent agreement with standard assumptions. Despite these similarities, however, we find that the angular momentum vectors of the gas and dark matter are poorly aligned, with a median misalignment angle of ∼ 30 degrees, which might have important implications for spin correlation statistics used in weak lensing studies. We present distributions for the component of the angular momentum that is aligned with the total angular momentum of each halo, and find that for between 5 and 50 percent of the mass this component is negative. This disagrees with the ‘Universal’ angular momentum distribution suggested by Bullock et al. (2001), for which the mass fraction with negative specific angular momentum is zero. We discuss the implications of our results for the formation of disk galaxies. Since galactic disks generally do not contain counter-rotating stars or gas, disk formation cannot occur under detailed conservation of specific angular momentum. We suggest that the material with negative specific angular momentum combines with positive angular momentum material to build a bulge component, and show that in such a scenario the remaining material can form a disk with a density distribution that is very close to exponential. Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
متن کاملThe Angular Momentum of Gas in Proto-Galaxies: II – The Impact of Preheating
We examine the effect of preheating of the intergalactic medium on galaxy formation using cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. By performing simulations both with and without a simple model for preheating, we analyse and compare the angular momentum distributions of the dark matter and the baryons. Preheating unbinds baryons from their dark matter haloes, yielding a baryonic mass fraction t...
متن کاملAngular momentum distribution of hot gas and implications for disk galaxy formation
We study the angular momentum profiles both for dark matter and for gas within virialized halos, using a statistical sample of halos drawn from cosmological hydrodynamics simulations. Three simulations have been analyzed, one is the “non-radiative” simulation, and the other two have radiative cooling. We find that the gas component on average has a larger spin and contains a smaller fraction of...
متن کاملJa n 19 98 Formation of Disk Galaxies : Feedback and the Angular Momentum problem
Tree-SPH, numerical simulations of disk galaxy formation in a cosmological context are presented. For the " passive " variant of such simulations, i.e. simulations not including the effects of stellar feedback processes, it is found that the resulting disk " galaxies " are far too small and specific angular momentum deficient, by about a factor of 8 in size and about a factor of 20 in specific ...
متن کاملGas fueling and nuclear gaseous disk formation in merging between a central massive black hole and a gas clump
We numerically investigate dynamical evolution of a merger between a central massive black hole (MBH) and a gas clump with the mass of 10 − 10 M⊙ in the central tens pc of a galactic bulge. We found that strong tidal gravitational field of the MBH transforms the initial spherical clump into a moderately thick gaseous disk (or torus) around the MBH. The developed disk is also found to show rotat...
